Our
first night in Hungary was spent just over the border and we woke up to
snow on the roof. It was a bit unexpected so we turned to the south and
Heviz for a swim in the thermal waters. The temperature was 32 degrees
centigrade and there was snow on the trees around the lake. There was
no doubting where the lake was as there were huge clouds of mist wafting
across the road. It was quite smelly (sulphur dioxide or bad eggs) but
definitely what the doctor ordered and warmed us up nicely.
We headed on to lake Balaton and tried hard to find a campsite but they
all laughed at us and said “no, closed for the winter”. We ended up sleeping
outside a huge 24 hour Tesco’s. Not very scenic but there you go. Eastwards
was calling us so we turned towards the Romanian border, not the most
dramatic of landscapes, mostly flatlands but we needed to make up some
time and it really was too cold to enjoy it.
